I trained at The Juilliard School 1973-1977 (Group 6) and worked in the theater from 1976 until the end of 1984. In 1985 I began graduate school and then postgraduate training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, and started a private practice in 1989. In 2021 I closed my practice returned to the craft of acting.
During my psychoanalytic career I taught at three psychoanalytic training institutes in New York City and published articles that appeared in several psychoanalytic journals.
My book, Infecting the Treatment: Being an HIV Positive Analyst (Analytic Press, 2002) was nominated for the Gradiva Award, presented by the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis.
I wrote a novel, inspired by characters in Shakespeare, Fortune’s Bastard: Love’s Pains Recounted (Chelsea Station Editions) that was published in the spring of 2013.
“This Garden Plot,” is a solo show that grew out of life in a pandemic. I developed a narrative out of a sequence of poems by Walt Whitman and Thom Gunn that tells a story of love, loss, mourning, and eventually, healing.
I performed it in United SoloShow Festival 2021, at Theatre Row in New York City, where it won the award for "Best Drama." Here's a link to a video about this show: https://youtu.be/zE9e4BznxmM
